Providing no specific reason, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales tendered his resignation Friday, effective September 17, 2007, after much political controversy surrounding the role of the Department of Justice in the firing of U.S. attorneys and his testimony before Congress relating to the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs.
Paul Clement, the current Solicitor General, will temporarily replace Gonzales until Senate confirmation of a new attorney general.
