The Food and Drug Administration announced today the discovery by inspectors of the Salmonella Saintpaul bacteria strain on a Mexican jalapeno pepper at a McAllen, Texas distribution plant. The Texas plant has recalled its jalapeno peppers, but the origin of the bacteria is unknown. Since April, this strain has caused over 1,200 individuals to become ill.
The FDA has updated its warning against consumption of jalapeno peppers and items made from the same, such as salsa. The update also includes information for packaging and shipping of fresh produce.
