Burris Denied Senate Seat

Following rejection by the secretary of the Senate, Nancy Erickson, on Monday of the senate appointment of Roland Burris to President-elect Obama’s senate seat, Burris was officially denied access today to the Senate chambers to take oath. Burris was appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich. Burris was told his credentials were not sufficient due to the certificate of appointment missing the signature of the Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White. White has refused to sign the certificate.

Although Burris stated he does not intend to cause confrontation over the matter, he will review other options for taking the seat.
