Senate Votes to Delay Digital Television Transition

The US Senate voted Monday on a bill to delay the nation’s transition from analog television to digital television originally scheduled for February 17 to June 12, 2009. Television stations who are already prepared to make the transition may switch to digital broadcasting before the deadline under the bill if they make available the unused spectrum for authorized public safety radio services. The DTV Delay Act also provides an extension for the subsidy program for digital converter boxes and will allow customers to apply for new coupons.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee is in the process of reviewing its own version of the bill.
