A California meatpacking plant on Sunday ordered the recall of more than 143 million pounds of frozen beef. The amount represents Westland/Hallmark Meat Company’s last two years of production. The recall stems from US Department of Agriculture concerns that sick cattle may have been slaugtered and could end up in the food supply.

Some of the meat had been used in school lunch programs, supermarkets, and by fast food chains.

Three weeks ago a video was released which showed numerous violations of federal animal care regulations at Hallmark Meat Packing. Westand/Hallmark suspended operations on February 4th.
