A new Facebook group created to remove Sheriff Joe Arpaio from power has created controversy after one of the page’s members posted the location of the Sheriff’s home. The group, which has grown to over 8,000 members in a single week, includes commentary about Arpaio, pictures taken from protests and information about future demonstrations. A recent post included a map to the Sheriff’s home in Fountain Hills and a satellite picture of the property.
The sheriff is known for overseeing the Tent City Jail, where inmates are housed under surplus military tents. Broiling summer heat or chilly desert winter, all 2,000 inmates live outside, sleeping on cots in old canvas tents. Pink undergarments are only one of Arpaio’s many innovative jail policies. For food, the sheriff serves inmates green — as in fetid — baloney sandwiches.
In Maricopa County jails, inmates don old-fashioned prison stripes and work on chain gangs. Arpaio’s extreme tactics, many of which specifically target illegal immigrants, have kept him in the public eye since he took office back in 1993.
