Stem Cell Research Ban Lifted

A federal appeals court ruled that federal funding for embryonic stem cell research may continue, two weeks after Federal Judge Royce C. Lamberth blocked President Obama’s 2009 executive order expanding stem cell research. Judge Lamberth cited a 1998 statute banning the use of federal funding for the destruction of embryos in his ruling. Research using stem cells derived from human embryos is claimed to be medically promising cause they can turn into any cell in the body. Scientists hope some day they can be used to treat or cure a variety of diseases and conditions.

The temporary suspension of the ban will free up $78 million in funding to 44 scientists National Institute of Health awaiting previously approved funds while the agency evaluates new applications. A surge in applications for funding is expected due to the ruling.
